6TH GRADE

Sharon Porter
6th Grade
Sharon Porter

All my life I have lived in beautiful Ventura County. My Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies for Elementary Education was obtained in 1990.  While raising my four kids, I substitute taught in almost every school in Simi Valley Unified for grades Kindergarten through 12th grade. For three years, I worked part time as the Reading Intervention Teacher at Sycamore Elementary and Arroyo Elementary. When my youngest was in 6th grade, it was time for me to go back to teaching full time. Having two boys and two girls of my own gives me an experienced perspective as a parent and understanding of what it is like for a child in 6th grade. Since I was young, I knew I wanted to be a teacher and am thrilled to teach 6th grade at Sycamore Elementary School. I enjoy building confidence and character into my students as they go into young adulthood.
For 17 years, I volunteered on the PTA board at Vista Elementary, Hillside Middle School, and Royal High School serving as President, Secretary, Auditor, and several other committee chair positions.  Serving our students and helping to make school the best possible experience for them is a passion of mine.
I  love to travel, spend time with my expanding family, and read.
Fun facts: I am a great whistler and have played the piano since I was five years old.

Jennifer Waer
My name is Jennifer Waer. I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley with my younger brother, Patrick. Most people assume that I became interested in special education because he has Down syndrome, but even before he was born when I was nine, I knew this was what I wanted to do. I got my undergraduate degree at Cal Lutheran University and my teaching credential at CSUN, during which time I worked as a paraprofessional at the fully inclusive CHIME Charter Elementary School. I completed my student teaching at Santa Su High in the spring of 2003 and started working at Sycamore the following fall. I've taught here ever since. In my spare time, I enjoy writing and photography. I'm also interested in the history of World War II, the development of different languages and accents, and I am a lifelong "Star Trek" fan. I love teaching my students because every year is different and presents new and exciting challenges and things to learn. I believe my job is to meet each student exactly where they are and move them as far forward as our combined efforts can get them.
